Entre las muchas razones por las que aprendemos una lengua extranjera destaca la posibilidad de conocer a personas de distintos lugares, y a través de ellas, tener acceso a una manera diferente de hacer y entender el mundo. Durante este curso propiciamos la relación de nuestros alumnos con otros de países angloparlantes. Hemos dado el primer paso estableciendo contacto con un colegio estadounidense, Gompers Middle School, de Los Ángeles y otro británico, Redcar Community College, de Redcar. Esperamos que nuestros alumnos establezcan una relación fluida con sus nuevos amigos y amigas por correspondencia y puedan aprender mucho sobre la cultura de estos países.

Tras un año intenso de preparación por fin tenemos a nuestro primer grupo bilingüe. Está compuesto por 21 alumnos y alumnas, todos entusiasmados ante el reto que se les plantea. Finalmente, las ANL impartidas en la Sección son Ciencias Naturales, Ciencias Sociales, Matemáticas y Tecnología Aplicada. Todo el profesorado está asimismo ilusionado con el nuevo curso.
Contamos con la ayuda de nuestra Asistente Brittany White, a quien veis en la foto durante una clase con los alumnos sobre su país de origen, los Estados Unidos.

Jornada sobre materiales bilingües

El pasado 9 de junio tuvo lugar en el CEP de Córdoba una jornada sobre grupos de trabajo que han abordado aspectos en torno al bilingüismo. Fuimos invitados a ella al haber estado trabajando durante este curso sobre el currículo integrado y elaborando materiales bilingües para el alumnado de 1º de ESO del curso próximo. Pudimos presentar nuestros materiales y explicamos cómo había funcionado el grupo de trabajo, los objetivos que nos habíamos propuesto alcanzar y cómo habíamos ido salvando los obstáculos encontrados. Presentamos públicamente nuestro espacio web, donde están cargados todos los materiales elaborados.

An ERASMUS student

We welcome Albert, an Erasmus student in Córdoba, who is going to help us with the bilingual project for three months. We hope he enjoys being with us.

Hi, my name is Albert and I come from Poland. I'm a student-participant of SOCRATES-ERASMUS program. Erasmus program is European international students exchange program which allows studying abroad for one year. Normally in Poland I'm studying at Technical University of Bialystok and thanks to this program I was able to come to Spain and study at Universidad de Cordoba. Anyone who is eager to travel and loves meeting new people and getting to know different cultures, Erasmus program is the best thing he could imagine!
My studies specialization is Electronics and Telecommunications. Basically it's about modern science like computers, mobile phones, high frequency devices... in one word it's physics. By coming to Spain I'm hoping to get to know spanish culture, habits and of course the language. Thanks to working in bilingual school, I'm hoping to increase my experience in getting to know all of those things.

El pasado miércoles 25 de Febrero tuvo lugar en el Teatro Municipal de Montoro la presentación de la Sección bilingüe del IES Santos Isasa a los padres y madres del alumnado de 6º de Primaria de los colegios de la localidad. La finalidad de tal presentación era informar sobre las características más importantes de un centro bilingüe y aclarar posibles dudas de los padres ante un modelo educativo tan novedoso.
Aquí os dejamos la presentación que sirvió como base para el coloquio entre el profesorado del IES y los padres.

To celebrate the School Day of Non Violence and Peace, the teachers in charge of the "Escuela Espacio de Paz" Project have organized several events, some of which have been conducted in English. The most important one is "The Tree of Good Wishes".
ESO students have written their wishes about peace and they have decorated with them one of the trees in the playgound, as if they were leaves, flowers and fruits. Some of the wishes have been translated into English and made public to everybody when the students booted their computers.

Some of the sentences the students have written are:
- Peace costs much, but it's worth the effort
- Either we all walk together towards peace or we'll never find it
- To be at peace with oneself is the best way to be at peace with others

- It's impossible to shake hands with a closed fist

Nuestros ayudantes lingüísticos han querido agasajarnos con un típico desayuno americano para conmemorar la fiesta de Thanksgiving. Hemos tenido que dejar el pavo para otro año, pero la comida presentada ha sido abundante y deliciosa.

Además, nos dirigieron unas sentidas palabras que nos emocionaron a todos. La fiesta hispano-estadounidense se prolongó durante todo el recreo y culminó una semana plena de sensaciones.

Today David and I gave a powerpoint presentation to some of the ESO and Bachillerato students. We explained the historical significance and also how we celebrate thanksgiving today. The students were very excited to learn about the special foods we eat and to see pictures from the parade.
It was very nice to get to talk about a holiday that is so special to David and I and that also shows that we are not only thankful for our material possessions but things like good health, family and friends.
Hopefully, our presentation has sparked a new curiosity in the students and a want to learn more about other cultures.
They certainly teach us as much if not more that we teach them.
David and I both hope to make a lasting impression on the curious and excited students as they have definitely made one on us.

IV Encuentro Regional Formación para el Plurilingüismo

Durante los días 17 y 18 de noviembre se ha celebrado en Granada el IV Encuentro Regional de Formación para el Plurilingüismo, al que han asistido de nuestro Centro Rafael Martínez, como Coordinador del Proyecto Bilingüe y Raúl Ruano, como profesor de Área No Lingüística. El encuentro, organizado por el CEP de Granada, estaba destinado a centros bilingües de Año 0 y en él se han abordado diferentes temas como el Portfolio Europeo de las Lenguas, los Programas Europeos, el Currículo Integrado y Materiales didácticos de áreas no lingüísticas. Todas las ponencias y talleres han sido de gran interés, por lo que el encuentro ha resultado muy productivo y satisfactorio. Además, ha posibilitado acercar al profesorado de diferentes centros de Andalucía. Yesterday, Brittany and I went to the two "first of ESO" classes to give a brief presentation about Halloween. We worked the previous night preparing a hand-carved pumpkin, which in the USA we call a "Jack 'O Lantern," and two posters with Halloween related vocabulary.

When we entered the classrooms, we told the students about various Halloween activities such as, dressing up in scary costumes and masks, trick-or-treating (children going door-to-door asking for candy), pumpkin carving, and decorating the house. We later played a popular song for the children called, "The Monster Mash" and had them look up words in the Spanish-English dictionaries. Each of the students received typical Halloween candy at the end of the class.
At the end of the day we placed a candle inside of the pumpkin and turned off all the lights so the children could see what a traditional Jack 'O Lantern looked like. Needless to say, the children were quite impressed as well as scared!

Hi. My name is Brittany and I am from Rhode Island. I'm 23 and live at home with my parents. I graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 2007 with a BA in Spanish. Greetings! My name is David Bissember and I am from New York, USA. This year I will be working at Santos Isasa School in Montoro, Cordoba as an English language assistant. I recently graduated from Siena College in Loudonville, New York with a bachelor's degree in Spanish, a minor in Political Science, and I also received an International Business Certificate. I love the way the Spanish language sounds, which is why I decided to come to Cordoba for the year. I believe that the exchange of cultures and language is very important in every society, and I hope to gain as much from my experience here in Spain as I plan to share of my own language and culture.

Durante los días 2 y 3 de Octubre se ha celebrado en la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de Córdoba el 3er Congreso sobre Metodologías Específicas y Diseño de Materiales Curriculares para la Enseñanza Plurilingüe, al que hemos asistido Coordinadores y Coordinadoras de Centros Bilingües de toda Andalucía. Las jornadas han resultado muy fructíferas, sobre todo porque ha permitido compartir experiencias y conocer de primera mano lo que se está haciendo en otras secciones bilingües. Para los centros que estamos en el Año 0 es de capital importancia estar al tanto de cómo han superado los posibles obstáculos los centros que ya llevan varios años de implantación de la sección bilingüe.

Dentro de los actos organizados por el centro para la recepción de nuestros ayudantes lingüísticos, queremos destacar una pequeña fiesta de bienvenida ideada por el Departamento de Inglés: un típico desayuno andaluz con el que agasajar a nuestros ayudantes y unas palabras de bienvenida de nuestro director.

Language Assistants

Hoy, 1 de Octubre, se han presentado oficialmente en nuestro Centro los dos ayudantes lingüísticos que van a colaborar con el Proyecto Bilingüe. Son Brittany White y David Bissember, estadounidenses. En realidad, aunque hoy haya sido su puesta de largo oficial, llevamos manteniendo contacto desde Julio 2008, fecha en que nos comunicaron su llegada a nuestro IES. Su labor con nosotros será de enorme importancia para la buena marcha del proyecto y desde aquí les deseamos que su estancia entre nosostros sea lo más fructífera posible.

Aula Bilingüe

Desde que supimos de la concesión de la Sección Bilingüe a nuestro IES vimos la necesidad de disponer de un aula específica para la misma, puesto que el departamento de Inglés resultaba absolutamente insuficiente para organizar todo el material y dar espacio a nuestros ayudantes lingüísticos para poder desarrollar su labor con el profesorado de las ANL (Área No Lingüística) implicadas en el Proyecto Bilingüe. Tenemos que agradecer a la Dirección del Centro las facilidades que nos han dado para encontrar ese espacio tan necesario. El aula alberga todo el material que se va a utilizar así como recursos audiovisuales.

El IES Santos Isasa de Montoro dispone de una Sección Bilingüe (Español-Inglés) que inicia su andadura en el curso 2008-09. Este año escolar, denominado Año 0, estará dedicado a la confección de materiales de las áreas no lingüísticas que van a impartir parte de su materia en los dos idiomas. Asimismo, el profesorado recibirá una formación más completa en la lengua inglesa. Será en el curso 2009-10 (Año 1) cuando recibiremos a los primeros alumnos en la sección bilingüe en 1º de ESO.

La finalidad de este blog es informar a toda la comunidad escolar del IES Santos Isasa de tan novedosa experiencia así como de reseñar todos los pasos que se van dando en su desarrollo.
